In most cyber security courses, students learn security topics from textbooks, research papers, online resources and via lab exercises of tools and techniques. Also scenario-based challenges further reinforce students learning. At the Department of Computer Science, The University of Memphis, in the graduate course on Network Security, the Puzzle-Based Learning approach is used for creating security-related puzzles to understand how addressing schemes, network protocol and input/output can affect system security and data breach in particular, infiltrate and exfiltrate sensitive data.

A research team at the Polish-Japanese School of Information Technology starts a 3-year project on a new method of training that combines puzzle-based learning and incidental (nomadic) learning to enable graduates of humanities adapt their skills to the requirements of the modern labor market. The planned solutions developed in the project will include the use of modern tools of communication such as iPhones, iPads, tablets, in the process of learning.

Puzzle-Based Learning is being offered as a Freshman Seminar for the Spring 2013 term at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. The aim of the seminar is to explore critical thinking and problem solving via Puzzle-Based Learning. A theme of the seminar will be to distil and discuss heuristics for tackling selected puzzles. Intertwined with this discussion we will also contrast the nature of heuristic problem solving in humans and computers. Class enrollment consists of a mix of students from various disciplines (Information Systems, Statistics, Economics, Biology, Spanish, Cognitive Science).
